Iceland as Iceland in Walter Mitty movie

Administrator 10 Jan 2014

Did you just watch Iceland in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty? Are you now searching for cheap flights to Iceland? Well look no further, the Walter Mitty experience could be closer than you think, and cheaper if you travel with WOW air.

Walter Mitty / Ben Stiller jumps from a helicopter into a dark and stormy looking North Atlantic OceanUs Icelanders know who the real star of Ben Stiller’s The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is, and it‘s not Ben (although he’s pretty good). Finally, Iceland gets a part as „itself“ in a foreign movie and it shines. The ethereal Icelandic scenery has been cast in the role of many places a few of which are „Beyond the Wall“ in Game of Thrones, Bhutan at the eastern end of the Himalayas in Batman Begins, Siberia in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, somewhere in former United States of America in Tom Cruise‘s Oblivion, a foreign planetoid in Star Trek: Into Darkness and “the beginning of time” in Ridley Scott’s Promotheus.
Professional critics may not be too pleased with the film but it still has an above average 7.7/10 rating at IMDb. It’s seems that people have very split views about Mitty, some love the movie and others … not so much. What many of the reviews have in common though is the emphasis on the exceptional cinematography, beautifully captured scenes and the depiction of Iceland in the movie. And let’s not forget the trailer where Icelandic band Of Monsters and Men shines bright.

In the film Ben Stiller plays Walter Mitty a daydreamer who’s about to lose his job at Life Magazine. In his vivid daydreams, which cause him to zone out from time to time, he gains super human powers that give him the ability to save the girl, rescue a child from an exploding building, telling off his boss and such. But reality becomes bigger than any daydream when Walter has to set out to find a missing negative from the magazine’s star globe-trotting photographer (Sean Penn). The search leads Walter Mitty to Iceland, among other places, where he has to deal with some unusual circumstances.

The “scateboarding scene”

Perhaps the most beautiful scene in the movie is where Walter longboards in the Icelandic country side, a scene that seems to stay with many people. This magnificent part of the movie was shot near the town of Stykkisholmur on the west coast of Iceland, or so they would have you believe. In actuality the real town of Stykkisholmur serves as Nuuk, Greenland, in the movie and the town of Seydisfjordur, on the east coast of Iceland plays the role of Stykkisholmur.  Anyway, we sure hope people won’t put themselves in danger skateboarding on the Icelandic country roads next summer. Those interested in checking out the beautiful Icelandic locations in the movie should rent a car and have their own personal Walter Mitty adventure trip.
